An Italian classic, Negroni Cocktail was placed as the second most loved drink in the world in 2016 by Drinks International (the 1st place was Old Fashioned). Thanks to Camilo Negroni, today we’re enjoying this bittersweet mixture.

Many variations of Negronis exist these days, some bartenders are using mezcal or rum as a substitute for gin. It could be said that Negroni is genuinely one of the classics and represents Italy’s style of living (La dolce vita).

Negroni Sbagliato (mistaken), is one of the many variations of Negroni and has taken over social media lately. This cocktail was made accidentally in Milano fifty years ago. The bar owner took the wrong bottle, instead of gin he took a bottle of sparkling wine.

Without a doubt, while enjoying a Negroni, you can feel the philosophy of living like an authentic Italian wherever you’re in the world.

What does a Negroni taste like?

Classic Negroni Cocktail is made of equal parts of gin, red (sweet) vermouth, and Campari. Most people don’t like it after the first time they try it. If you have never tried Campari before, it is said that it starts to taste good the third time you drink it. We’re sure you’ll get used to its strong bittersweet flavor. Therefore, we can describe this cocktail as nonchalant, urban, and quite strong.

The character of a Negroni comes from the Campari and the additional aromatic twist of orange peel. All three ingredients (gin, Campari, vermouth) contain alcohol, so it is a quite strong drink. Its taste is a combination of botanicals from gin, balanced with the sweetness of vermouth and the bitterness of Campari. This pleasure will cost you approximately 10$ – 15$ in a bar.

For those looking for a non-alcoholic version of Negroni, there is no. The closest you can go is to take a bottle of San Bitter (Italian soda). It’s hard to mimic an alcoholic cocktail, but in this case, this is all you can do. San Bitter’s flavor imitates pretty well Campari taste.

How to make a Negroni?

First of all, try to find the best gin-vermouth fit. We suggest Beefeater gin and Martini Rosso as vermouth. Negroni recipe:

Ingredients:

30 ml Gin

30 ml Campari

30 ml Sweet Vermouth

Preparation:

Fill the mixing glass with ice cubes and pour all three ingredients over the ice. Make sure you have enough ice, the more you use the less will dilute the cocktail. Stir your mixture until well chilled. Strain in a glass over a large ice cube. As a garnish, you can use orange peel.

Serve in: Old Fashioned Glass
